Dead Pines Have Silver (Blue) Lining

The recent pine beetle infestation across the West has a silver lining, or should we say “blue” lining.    When the beetles attack the tree, they introduce a blue stain fungus into the sapwood that prevents the tree from protecting itself, ultimately killing the tree.   However, a beautiful blue gray staining is left inside the tree.  The structural integrity of the wood remains.  “Beetle kill blue pine” has now made its way into the world of finish carpentry and woodwork.   There are  several local mills producing beetle kill blue pine rough cut lumber, flooring, wainscoting and even furniture.  The photo shows a tongue and groove blue pine ceiling recently installed in this author’s house.
